Review of Kingdom of Heaven (2005) by Alice V — 15 Nov 2010
When I first saw this film, I was plagued by a strange feeling. It is the feeling you get when watching a four-star epic being reduced to a three-star action picture.
Even though I extremely enjoyed it when I first saw it, I was compelled to see the Director's cut. The Director's cut remains one of the best directors cuts of all time. Ridley Scott restored the soul into the film, and transformed it into the great epic it was supposed to be.
On the Acting side, all of the performances are great, with the exception of Orlando Bloom, who kind of "Orlando Blooms" his way through this movie. That is not, however, something I dock points for. Hey, I still gave "The Matrix" a positive review. Astonishingly enough I found myself paying more attention than normal to the characters and situations in this film, not just the action. The way the violence is depicted, it shows the true brutality of the crusades, and made me genuinely concerned for the characters during the battles.
Overall, a historical epic that makes "Troy" seem like sand beneath Ridley Scott's sandal. Two Thumbs up.
