Review of King of New York (1990) by Curtis P — 22 Jan 2010
Ferrara proves himself yet again with this brilliant mix of style and action. An exquisite cast featuring Christopher Walken, Laurence Fishburne, David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, Steve Buscemi, and others makes this more than simply a memorable gangster film.
Brutality, hilarity, and artistry all comingle in this exploration of one ex-con seeking to not only reclaim his clout but also to do some good in the brief period before he is either killed or sent back to jail.
Walken's performance is truly nuanced and inspiring, a performance that only he could give because of its bizarre idiosynchratic subtleties. Loads of fun for fans of gangster cinema as well as those who appreciate artistic transgressive films.
