Review of King Kong (1933) by Alexis C — 26 Dec 2009
This film may be old, but it still remains to be one of the most creative and original monster movies ever made! It still amazes me when I watch the film, even after the recent release of Jackson's 'King Kong' remake! The effects are still brilliant, and there are no flaws, no flaws at all! The ape looks awesome, the acting is brilliant, and the film is so well made! The most clever part of the film is the great synchronisation of live action with the stop motion animation, it must have taken them ages to get it right! and to achieve such a great result!
The story follows a film crew, lead by director Carl Denham (Armstrong), who's hell-bent on making his film, and featuring in it the giant ape Kong, but Denham is unaware that Kong is not ready to be used as an extra in a film! After a rather un-exciting first day of filming, when the natives of the island discover the film crew, and don't seem to want them there, the crew return to the ship. But that night the natives sneak aboard the crew's ship, and capture Ann, with plans to use her as a sacrifice to the legendary Kong. A search and rescue team, lead by Jack Driscoll (Cabot) and Denham set out into the forest of Skull Island to try and retrieve Ann. The team run into things like a Stegosaurus, and a large carnivorous Brontosaurus (not their real name, but 'meh'), then they run into Kong, who's waiting to spill some blood for his bride. When Ann is rescued, Kong is captured and brought back to New York to be shown to the world. But after the press drive Kong mad, he escapes and causes disaster and a lot of people's death! Then at the end the famous Empire State Building, which is still a land-mark scene for these days of film-making!
The film never gets old, it will remain a classic and a very respectable one! You MUST see this film, is the land-mark for all modern day film-making! And you have to see it before seeing Jackson's new 2005 remake, so you can point out all the homages in the 2005 version! 10/10! A brilliant movie!
