Review of King Kong (1933) by Mike H — 18 Jan 2010
One of the first movies that was more about special effects than about plot. You're almost obligated to like it because it's so iconic. But when it comes down to it, the original King Kong really isn't that good.
Yes, even for its time, film technique was ahead of this one. The acting is terrible and the screenplay drags. I don't know why every film professor likes to pretend King Kong was the first good movie.
What about Metropolis? What about everything Charlie Chaplin did? What about everything Georges Melies did? There's a lot that happened during and prior to this film that had better plot, better editing, and better effects.
The idea has its charm, but the execution is just about unwatchable.
