Review of King Kong (1933) by Calvin C — 18 Jul 2010
This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the Daddy of all monster movies, and one of the best films ever made.
I was seven years old when I first saw it, and it absolutely terrified me. If terror had have been the only emotion it elicited, I may not have watched it again. However, watching King Kong didn't only scare me pantless, it also mesmerised me. I somehow loved the exhilarating, petrifying thought of an angry giant ape.
As I got older, I viewed it with more maturity, and thoughts of 'giant ape, giant ape... there go my pants!', were overridden by thoughts about this Beauty and the Beast type story and thoughts about prejudice and judging books by the covers and about feeling actual sympathy for the gargantuan gorilla.
This film still mesmerises me today, but I'm no longer scared. It is an absolute delight that stands viewing after viewing and never gets old. Kong still reigns supreme!
