Review of King Kong (1933) by Art S — 28 Jul 2011
A monkey falls in love with a woman. You hear that plot and you would think "That sounds like a stupid movie" then you think a little longer and you say, "Hey! That was the plot of King Kong." The idea may seem dumb, but the execution is brilliant. That's not just what the film is about. It's about a film crew going to an island to shoot a movie, but instead finding natives, dinosaurs and a 50 foot tall ape, who happens to like their female lead. I really love this film because this is just a simple story. It's straightforward, very exciting and also very entertaining. The film's costumes and visual effects may be a little dated now, but still I do have to admire the creativity the film crew had to put up with. The characters are also very likable, and still interesting. We want to see these characters get out alive. We care about what's happening on screen, even if what we see on screen looks fake. That's great writing there. We also get a look into the insight of Kong the monster of the film. We are asked to feel sorry for him, even when he's doing bad things, and surprisingly we do. To the audience, he's just a naïve animal, who doesn't know what's going on or what to do. All these aspects together mesh really well and form a masterpiece that will delight audiences for generations to come.
9.7/10.
