Review of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) by Themerc 1 — 14 May 2017

King Arthur has been getting a lot of heat that it does not deserve. No, it's not perfect, but it is fun. It's very fun. I've seen a number of reviews that criticize it for not following its original source material, but that's not a valid reason to trash the film. Comic book movies don't always follow their source material, yet they score high 80s and 90s. I've also heard that it "shows too much, and doesn't tell". Well, that's because Guy Ritchie is a very visual director. Sometimes his films will have a little too much style over substance, but that can be a good thing.

This film is not perfect, but it's fun, and that's all it needed to be. I didn't go into the theater expecting a new Lord of the Rings, I went in expecting what I got. Keep in mind, this is a summer blockbuster. In the end, it comes down to what you want. If you want a history rich story with amazing set pieces and incredible writing, this is not for you. If you want a fun and entertaining action/fantasy epic with some surprisingly good performances, this is for you. Don't let these critics decide whether or not you want to see it, see it for yourself. I would very much like to see another one of these, but because of it's stupidly low score, that probably won't happen. Good luck, Mr. Ritchie.
