Review of Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) by Martin T — 23 Sep 2009
The brightest and most beautiful jewel in the Ealing crown - this is a film that dazzles 60 years after it was made. With a wonderfully literate script, first rate performances, and an exquisite sense of Edwardian style, it is absolute perfection.
Alec Guinness takes the acting plaudits for his portrayal of eight members of the D'Ascoyne family, but Dennis Price also gives a career-best performance as the charismatic scoundrel determined to wipe out those who stand in the way of his birthright.
My favourite line, as spoken by Price's mass-murderer is: "The next morning I went out shooting with Ethelred - or rather, to watch Ethelred shooting; for my principles will not allow me to take a direct part in blood sports.
".
