Review of Killing Them Softly (2012) by Mike C — 10 Aug 2013
Going 90 minutes to see one perfectly set-up line is quite a stretch. Before that, I wondered about the point of the movie. I wondered why there were so many political speeches in the background. Turns out maybe I missed the brilliance of some of that...the characters more or less acting out what has just been said on the televisions. But I did not miss the final bit and Pitt delivered it quite well.
Hate gangster movies for the most part but this one is a little different. I like that the down-trodden guys pulled off the robbery and that leads to all kinds of problems. McNairy has had a lot of roles and has a lot more roles on the way and easy to see why. He was pretty good. Pitt, I think, is always solid. You can say he's always Brad Pitt, but if it works...
At 85 minutes in, I thought the film was going to end and I really was pretty disappointed. Why did I just watch all that? But it kind of comes together in the final five minutes and Pitt really does deliver a knock-out few lines. By the way: Richard Jenkins has the best voice ever.
