Review of Killing Them Softly (2012) by Kevin R — 06 Jan 2014
America is not a country. It is a business.
The mob partakes in a series of large poker games established by a notorious thief and man who at one point robbed his own game. A set of robbers knock off one of the gambling spots knowing the gambling organizer will be blamed. The mob participants after being robbed hire some muscle to track down the robbers.
"Emotional, not fun, a lot of fuss. They cry. They plead. They beg. They piss themselves. They call for their mothers. It gets embarrassing.".
"I like to kill them softly, from a distance. Not close enough for feelings. Don't like feelings. Don't want to think about them.".
Andrew Dominik, director of Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and the upcoming Blonde, delivers Killing Them Softly. The storyline for this picture had potential but kind of concludes poorly and definitely could have been better. The action scenes are top rate and the acting is pretty good. The cast includes Brad Pitt, James Goldolfini, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, and Scoot McNairy.
"He didn't have no eyebrows left, not much hair, and no sense of humor either.".
I was actually really excited to see this movie when the previews first aired; unfortunately, this wasn't as good as I had hoped. The storyline was fairly good, and the characters were well portrayed and well written, but the movie turns out just to be okay...like Savages. I do recommend seeing this but only if you're a fan of action or gangster movies. I would not add this to my DVD collection.
"I guess these guys, they just want to go to jail. Probably feel at home there.".
Grade: C+.
