Review of Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) by Tyler S — 28 Jul 2008
Usually, you can't judge a film by its title, unless the title is "Killer Klowns From Outer Space." At that point, you should know what you are getting into. If you were guessing an unbarred cheese fest, then you were correct.
It has the feel of a big ol' B movie. Things like bad dialouge, bad acting, and ridiculous storylines ensure that. The feel would carry on throughout the whole film despite three definate downfalls.
First of all, the movie starts off with a wrong feel. Maybe it was the fact that the credits didn't have the right look. Or maybe it was the fact that the theme is actually suprisingly good and catchy, a no no in "B" films.
I don't know. All I know is that it doesn't feel right. The Second downfall has to do with special effects. The genre of "Killer Klowns" is usually known for ridiculously bad effects.
Despite the cotton candy cocoons, laser gun beams, etc., the effects just look too good (see Evil Dead 2 to view proper genre effects). The third downfall is hard to place your finger on, but it just makes things seem far different than any other film similar to this.
If, however, you don't mind clowning around and having a ridiculous movie to watch, you should feel right at home.
