Review of Kill Your Darlings (2013) by Brad S — 08 Nov 2013
Much like The Beats' work, I can sense that this film will be divisive with it's audience. Those who love it and those who hate it. My rating says which camp I'm in. The film starts extremely well and gradually loses a bit of interest in its third act.
But the performances by Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall, and Daniel Radcliffe are nothing short of astonishing. With extremely strong cinematography and production design, this film was visual eye candy the entire time.
Overall the music really worked to help everything gel, other than a couple times when the choice of obviously modern music took me out of the story for a bit and made me question that choice. But I also liked one of the scenes with modern music because it really worked emotionally.
The editing is strong, the sound is strong, and everyone in the cast from the biggest to the smallest roles felt right. Truly a great feature film debut from a first time writer/director. I can't wait to savor this story again on blu-ray on the more intimate small screen at home.
I have a feeling it will hold up there as well.
