Review of Kill List (2011) by Samuel G — 07 Jun 2012
A British kitchen sink drama wrapped in a cloak of mysterious thriller and witchcraft!
A sense of tension builds from the start, Jay-a family man; ex soldier turned hitman, is coaxed back to "work" by a friend. This is aided by the unsettling forboding score (Ala the Shining) and the unusual events which unfold.
The first of three "hits",sets the tone- a Priest. The second hits line of business totally flips Jay into psycho mode.
At this point the film has flagged several incidents which echo Elements of Hammer horror and the Wicker Man.
Now the first 3/4 of the film are awesome. The sad thing about the ending is the total lack of bringing the mysterious elements and offering a shred of explanation! The film simply offers you a totally ambiguous sucker punch- influenced by Wicker man- but without sense of why. Quite incredible really. Still worth watching- excellent grounded and realistic performances with obvious touches of adlibbed characterisation. I have looked online for further insight and explanation- but even the director seems unsure of what it's all about!
