Review of Kill List (2011) by Caesar M — 16 Nov 2012
Kill List is a movie that is for not everyone for it confusing narrative will definitely leave some scratching their head with little to no idea at what they have seen. As a fan of complex movies Kill List deliver a great thought provoking experience, even if it is disjointed.
Kill List follows a hitman taking a new assignment with the promise of a big payoff for three killings. What starts off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness. The film biggest problem is that its three act try to be three completely different films. The first act is more of a marriage drama, the second act is a gangster film, and the final act leans towards horror. This creates a disjointed experience as the three acts feel completely different in their setup. Although, the differentiation in the three acts adds to the variety of the film. It written a certain level of realism that makes the films seems plausible in today world. Another great thing about Kill List are its characters which you can analysed as they have depth in them and bring some interesting questions we are left to answer for ourselves. The film dialogue is brilliant, though you will have to adjust to the actors thick accents. The acting is from it cast was great. Though I did feel Neil Maskell was limited in his roles which is why we see him angry most of the time. The cinematography is largely dull in the first act mainly due to not much happening beside characters talking. The other two acts are much better filmed. The second act is not afraid to show us the violent killings that occurs with good effects to show the gore. The third act is actually well filmed better than most horror films as you get an unsettling feeling of claustrophobia and the limited lightning in a dark tunnel keeps you as your toes for you never know what's about to come out at you. I do hope director Ben Wheatley gets an opportunity to a direct a horror movie in his for what his direction in the third is impressive and perfect for the diminishing horror genre.
Kill List is disjointed, confusing, complex well acted, well filmed, and not for everyone. If you want something that will challenge your brain go right ahead as Kill List will challenge even the smartest of people.
