Review of Kikujiro (1999) by Eric R — 02 Sep 2007
Famed Japanese director Beat Takeshi has been one of my favorite filmmakers and is quite known for his violent movies like Fireworks/Hana-bi and Zatoichi. He does a complete turn-around with this delightful and, yes, non-violent film.
This film is a funny roadtrip taken by a pair of very opposite characters: an innocent child and a street smart middle-aged man. The little boy is in search of his mother who has relocated to another town after realizing the emptiness in his life. The man, the ex-con husband of the boy's neighborhood "aunt," is his most unwilling but hilarious companion. I see this as the portrayal of two stages of one life, brought together to understand each other and then themselves better.
