Review of Kidulthood (2006) by Daniel A — 24 Jun 2008
I really, really enjoyed this, despite myself. Noel Clarke acts like a cunt and writes like a motherfucker - and what a result! Cliched as fuck in many ways, but it's certainly a much more convincing depiction of London inner city life than EastEnders (the BBC's No1 comedy show, for my American readers).
Bullys, bredrens, blowjobs and bludcluts collide with predictably violent and tragic results. The Brit equivalent of American ghetto flicks (not to mention the parallels with urban French flick, La Haine) Kidulthood amps up the rawness just that little bit higher, with strong, unrestrained performances from the ensemble cast all the way through.
Alongside the likes of Dog Soldiers, This is England and 28 Days Later, this film illustrates why the UK film industry has become a force to be reckoned with this decade.
