Review of Kids (2013) by Vanessa B — 20 Aug 2008
Talk about scared straight. This movie and Aronofsky's 'Requiem for a Dream' should be shown on a double bill to high school students during their freshman year. It's hard to believe that Larry Clark hunted down non-actors for their roles here, all of the performances feel natural and real.
It's easy to dismiss this movie as an indie flick trying to get noticed because of its shock value, but I think it has more merit than that. I was also taken by Clark's visual style, his experience as a photographer really comes through watching this and it's easy to see how his style (as a photographer, not as a director) influenced the likes of Martin Scorsese when he directed 'Taxi Driver'.
The movie is completely engaging from start to finish, which is a feat since what's going on in the film is so grotesque it should be impossible to watch. I'm definitely planning on seeking out more of Clark's work after viewing this.
