This was a serious misstep for Ferrell and Duvall both. It's hard to imagine what they saw in the script that made them want to take the movie in the first place. It's a dumb movie, not funny for a second.
What more is there to say? This was a joke. You'll find yourself laughing at it, rather than with it.
