Review of Kick-Ass (2010) by Maurice W — 04 Feb 2014
"NERD BECOMES SUPERHERO".
- One of the most original superhero movies of the last decade is this 2010 'Kick-Ass' by Matthew Vaughn. Based on the popular graphic novel this story is about a young man who wants to become a true superhero. The balance between the humor and violence is very well done and although I'm not that much of a superhero movie fan, I did enjoy this film a lot. It even got a sequel. 'Kick-Ass' stars Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloë Moretz, Xander Berkeley, Evan Peters (American Horror Story) and Nicolas Cage (Con Air) as Big Daddy. This is one movie that kicks ass...
Dave Lizewski (Johnson) is a nerdish teenager who hangs out with his two best friends at the comic book store. He is ignored by the girls who think he's gay and gets robbed by the boys. When he finally has enough of his dull life, he buys a costume online and steps up as a superhero. His first act of heroism takes him to the emergency room, but Dave is not a quitter. His second act is a success and is filmed by some teenage kids. His alter ego 'Kick-Ass' becomes a hit online.
During one of his missions Kick-Ass gets into trouble with some drug dealers. A masked young girl and a man in a batman costume show up and kill all the bad guys without remorse. They are Hit-Girl (Moretz) and Big Daddy (Cage), two well trained superheroes. When Kick-Ass is approached by another superhero called Red Mist (Mintz-Plasse), he agrees to team up with his. Little does he know that Red Mist is the son of Crime Lord Frank D'Amico, who want Kick-Ass dead.
