Review of Kick-Ass (2010) by Sam C — 10 May 2015
After seeing Kick-Ass three times now I can say that I have no issues with the film whatsoever, this is just one awesome experience! Kick-Ass is a wonderful film that is in a way a parody of superhero movies but also a hardcore rated R film with some insanely violent action sequences and raunchy humor.
Let me start out by talking about the extremely clever script written by Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn. For those of you who don't know, Kick-Ass is based of a graphic novel by the same name and was written by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.
, I have not read the source material yet, even though I want to soon, so I cannot compare that and the script. What I can say is that Goldman's and Vaughn's script was extremely well written in all three categories; those three categories being story, characters, and dialogue.
The story itself is just so cool and unique, what makes it even better is that is executed perfectly. I was fully invested into the story and was never bored, a story like this is so rare nowadays because most studios just go for your typical superhero blockbuster but this one strays away from that.
I can't say this enough but this story is so unique and awesome, what makes it even better is that is has cool characters that you actually care about. The characters in this movie are just so awesome, all of them are unique in there own way and you actually care about them.
Even though this is a dark movie it still has a fair share of well written humor, there were actually quite a few scenes that had me laughing and chuckling. Not only did Vaughn do a great job at writing the film, he also did a brilliant job at directing the film.
His style was just perfect for this film, his transitions were incredible, the way he moved the camera was great, and he really did capture the settings that are in this movie. He also did a very good job at filming the action sequences, which were bloody fantastic and extremely well choreographed.
One of the best things about this movie is it's incredible cast. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was great as one of our main heroes because you could believe that he was a typical teenager just trying to do what no one else has done, his performance was very good and was very likeable.
The standout performance in this movie is without a doubt Chloe Grace Moretz as Hit-Girl, she just became this ruthless character and she did such an amazing job, what makes it even more incredible is that she was only eleven while filming this movie.
Another thing, how often do you get to see an eleven year old girl killing a bunch of people and cussing like crazy; it adds to the shock value. Nicolas Cage gives one of his best performances in recent years as Big Daddy, Christopher Mintz -Plasse was very good as Red Mist, Mark Strong played a great villain, and Clark Duke and Evan Peters were perfect for their supporting roles.
In the end Kick-Ass is not your typical superhero movie and is a movie I would recommend, because this movie truly does "kick ass".
