Review of Key Largo (1948) by Stephen H — 26 Feb 2012
Another solid Huston film that seems to blend his connection with Sartre's Hui Clos ( he directed a Broadway adaptation) with The Maltese Falcon and his experiences during the war to create this taught thriller with Robinson doing his turn as mafia don and Bogart as war hero just returned home.
Mixes up 'hell is other people' with sympathy for the downtrodden American Indian and numerous other messages in a soup that tastes good. No always spoken about as a noir but it certainly has many elements and certainly the tone, great tension and claustrophobia, and a satisfying conclusion.
Neat.
