Review of Key Largo (1948) by Jard M — 13 Jun 2012
Lately there seems to be a surge of hostage movies, in which a group of people are taken hostage by some person or group of people and work valiantly hard to escape. It's interesting because Key Largo is essentially one of those movies, but whereas most, not all but most, of today's hostage movies tend to be mediocre to awful, based on the stupidity of the hostages, Key Largo does it well.
Having a top notch cast is a great start, everyone does their own role well and you can see why Claire Trevor won an Academy Award for her performance. The hurricane adds in an extra tension, as the guy in charge is now scared that the hurricane could kill him.
Each of the main characters has depth and it makes it all the more intriguing. It's probably the movie's greatest strength. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and can see why it would be considered a classic.
If you want to see a hostage movie made correctly, look no further than Key Largo.
