Review of Key Largo (1948) by Mehdi P — 30 Mar 2008
Among movies set in Florida, this is the best. You've got your beach side hotel, your late-season hurricane, your humidity (this was before air conditioning), your aimless drifter (Humphrey Bogart), cops with Southern accents, and even some Seminole Indians.
Throw in a has-been crime lord named Johnny Rocco--who takes over the hotel and terrorizes the owner and his daughter-in-law during a storm--and you've got a perfect formula for a suspenseful crime drama.
Because this movie was made in 1948, when Hollywood still had morals, the movie sends a clear message that crime doesn't pay.
