Review of Kes (1970) by Vicky B — 26 Feb 2008
The highlight of my English GCSE teaching year. Able to make you pee your pants laughing (the footie scene, especially Brian Glover's outrageous dive) and sob into your hankie all at the same time. Very true to the fantastic book "A Kestrel For A Knave".
My students were always surprised at how much they loved this film amongst all the drivel they usually watch. It helps when you're from Yorkshire, too :) Dai Bradley was superb. Apparently, the caning scene was for real - the boys weren't expecting to be hit for real & nearly went on strike!
