Review of Kes (1970) by Tor M — 19 Dec 2018
The film that put Ken Loach on the map and a film I have been wanting to see for ages.
Meet Billy Casper. A boy that struggles at school, as well as home. He has a kind heart but gets bullied and having a home where he shares a bed with his 10 year older brother that has kind of given up on life and a mom that is not up to much. It's safe to say he has a hard time coping. He does attend some work too but gives most of his money to his mother. Somehow, this fifteen year old manage to stay rather positive - always gentle and polite. He is interested in animals and he captures and befriends a falcon and trains it. This is his passion and the only thing he really manage and care about. His only positive purpose to his unhappy existence. His teachers never care for him - nobody does, accept from gentle souls around the streets.
This is a coming of age story, sat in the 60's among the English working class. I find a lot of love here and plenty of tough decitions and daily duties. Some very good scenes and I dig the soccer scene - what a teacher!
I really enjoyed this film and it is easily one of the better British films ever made, and possibly Loach's best work.
8.5 out of 10 cold showers.
