Review of Kes (1970) by Darcey P — 17 Dec 2010
Absolutely superb - one of the best films ever made.
Loach began his career with this exceptional tale of one boy, Billy Casper, and his love for a Kestral in a time of great poverty in Northern England. Highlights include Billy's bullish gym teacher, in one of the greatest and most hilarious amateur performances of all time and Colin Welland as the kindly and interested Mr Farthing who along with his new found feathery friend, gives Billy's quietly depressing and futile existance the faintest semblance of hope. A tremendously well made film that set the tone for Loach's continually distinguished career as a sensitive and aware documenter of England's poverty-stricken and corrupt social and political climate.
