Review of The Secret Life of Bees (2008) by Darcey P — 19 Nov 2011
Bees tracks the early life of Lily Owens as she tries to understand and come to grips with the life and death of her mother. Lily's father is abusive and she runs away to a honey farmer who happens to be an African American women living in South Carolina during the formative stages of the civil rights movement.
Bees does a good job of drawing emotion out of the viewer. It's hard not to sympathize with Lily as she tries to understand her past. The pacing is a little slow, but the story more than makes up for it.
Dakota Fanning is a really good actor. It will be interesting to see where her career takes her. To be honest all the acting performances are quite strong. Good movie.
