Review of Kelly's Heroes (1970) by Gareth R — 25 Sep 2008
The cast overact as if this is a silly comedy instead of a rather dull war film horrendously overpopulated to the extent that I had no idea who I was looking at. Lt Kelly, boringly played by Clint Eastwood who may have actually been asleep during filming, hears about some Nazi gold and convinces his platoon to cross the enemy line and steal it.
The plot is constantly unclear, some of the filming is amateurish, not much happens, for some reason there's a hippy in it despite this being World War II, and for a film in which every character is an American soldier, the anti-American army theme is far too in the face.
Still Don Rickles's Crapgame is a fun character. Did I mention just how many characters there are? Because of this, none of them get to shine and I'm still not even sure who two of the only three to die are.
