Review of Keanu (2016) by Brandon E — 23 Jul 2016
It's a movie that almost had me laughing out tears. What makes the film works is the Key and Peele and how ridiculous the premise of the film is. It's not a unique story it's a by the numbers comedy crime film. However the performances adds a lot of quality to the film. It is a funny film, something that has been absent in some time. The film shares a similar tone to Pineapple Express blending humor with graphic violence.
The premise of the story is Keanu a drug lord cat that escapes a raid and finds its way to our main characters. When the bad guys take the cat. Key and Peele will go through extra lengths to recover the beloved cat. This journey leads them to the 17th street blips. Gang members that were kicked out of the bloods and crips. The duo pose as ruthless gangsters in order to get Keanu back. Similar to the film Dope that played against stereotypes of African Americans. So does this film since Key and Peele aren't necessarily hood. The funniest scene involves Anna Faris.
I highly recommend this film for a good laugh.
