Review of Kate & Leopold (2001) by Nathan C — 17 Nov 2011
Sweet and thoughtful, but lacks substance. Arguably a better romantic comedy than most; however, it gets folded over into its own pretzel.
A 19th Century Duke has to choose a bride. Yet he follows a strange man who brings him to... THE FUTURE! Which is kinda lame as it's the 21st Century. Despite that, he seeks a woman who's perfect for him.
Hugh Jackman is excellent as the dashing yet clueless fish-out-of-water. He injects life into the film, and some of his adjusting to the modern world is quite amusing. The one twist that's intriguing is the time-travel idea. Too bad they didn't develop it enough. I love how they actually included chivalry in a romantic comedy. Not since a John Hughes movie was this heard of! The other actors do well in their roles. Pretty lighting, a good score, and decent writing in the 3 quarters makes it worth watching.
But it's somewhat hampered by its misdirection. The plot takes very weird turns, making for an ending that's "wtf, mate". Meg Ryan seems less enthusiastic about it than perky. Liev Schreiber's absence for most of the film makes ends a bit too loose. Even though it factors into my time, it fails to leave a lasting impression.
"Kate and Leopold" makes a competent match with some popcorn, but sparks just don't fly. They fizzle. Engaging viewing along the way, though.
