Review of Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) by Epifania A — 16 Aug 2010
Kal Ho Naa Ho starts fast and furious: delivering a lot of laughs, but life becomes much sadder as the movie progresses. It's a touch melodramatic, having your heart strings pulled for more than two thirds of this 3-hour film.
I had the bright idea of watching it at 11pm, just before going to bed; only to find myself tear drained, fatigued and crawling to bed at 2:30am. Filled with Bollywood's beautiful, the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan, Kal Ho Naa Ho delivers memorable tracks and dance routines; made up of popular culture motifs from India and the United States.
Think "Pretty Woman" sung to a bhangra beat. I also absolutely loved the melody and meaning of the theme tune, "...la la la, kal ho naa ho!" Not exactly "la la la," but that will have to suffice in abscence of remembering the words.
Basically pleasant viewing, but block out your schedule and your thoughts of "die already!" to get through this epic.
