Review of Kahaani (2012) by Ramesh M — 19 Aug 2012
This movie easily slips into my kitty of the top 25 bollywood thrillers ever. Vidya Bagchi's journey in finding her lost husband, the sheer conviction with which she slips into that fictional character, superbly convincing us with the antics of a chronic expectant and a brilliant plot makes this flick justly captivating.
With sumptuous twists and thrills thrown at anticipating intervals, the movie keeps you at the edge of your seat and treats you with an overwhelmingly startling climax. Sujoy ghosh after a trail of not so gratifying feats does a clean sweep with Kahaani.
The ensemble cast delivers exceptional performances and renders the much needed factual elements to craft this tour de force. Vidya's character has been skilfully sketched with many layers. For instance her playful inquisitiveness with the teashop boy, light exchanges with the lodge in charge to the final fury with Damji; all of them clearly classified yet bonded with so much of feminine veracity.
Setu's camera coherently captures the beauty of Calcutta in its raw form and Namrata's dexterous editing adds the needed glitter. Gosh this time has quite brilliantly kept the characters well chiselled and ensured the viewers to be given almost no room in guessing the continuance of the plot.
Music is influential and ensures to cater the narrative with the needed pitch. Ghosh eloquently brings every frame to life with a generous effort on the screenplay and progressiveness. Altogether this Kahaani is indeed a celebration of the compelling audacity of womanhood.
