Review of Kahaani (2012) by Soham G — 08 Nov 2012
Honestly, there's still something intangible holding me back from loving Bollywood movies. This is about a pregnant woman who has lost her husband in India, and she must solve the mystery of his disappearance herself, as seemingly nobody has ever seen him before.
I will be the first to admit that I am just not that well versed in Bollywood; I've seen four or five movies at the most, and have yet to see one that has wowed me, or even fully connected with me, for that matter.
I will tip my hat to this movie in that I don't think I have ever seen a pregnant woman on a mission movie before, so that's definitely something new. I did think Vidya Balan did a good job as the strong willed protagonist, and it is filmed well enough to appreciate it.
The problem I have with it is that while I was always engaged by it, I always knew where it was going (up until the ending, that is, which is impossible to see coming). In addition to that, I also felt that it got a bit repetitive, hitting the same notes multiple times as she runs into dead end after dead end.
Still, there is so much that I don't understand about this culture, so I wouldn't go off of my mixed opinion if you wanted to see this.
