Review of Kaboom (2010) by Amanda C — 14 Apr 2011
If you're looking for a plot or coherence, this is not the film for you. I'm sure that there was some semblance of a point when this film was initially conceived, but it has long since disappeared.
If you try really hard, you come up with 'it's a film about young adults and their hormones' and even that's stretching it. What Kaboom is, is a ridiculous amount of fun. It's bazaar and off the wall, extremely colourful with a collection of incredibly good looking people who have two things in mind, sex and conspiracy theories.
Director Araki takes a lot of cues from early surrealist films going as far as using clips from Chien Andelou, which I am eternally grateful for its use as I now know I'm not the only one who likes that film.
Kaboom starts out strange and become stranger, ending very abruptly with a boom. While it sometimes lags when Araki spends too long with dialogue and classical shot reverse shots that allow you to realize just how ridiculous what you're watching is, the rest of the film with its fantastic colour pallet and funky, trippy imagery is a ridiculous amount of fun.
I haven't had this much fun at the movies for a long time. Although that might be becuase I won't be tested on this one...
