Review of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) by Joe F — 22 Jun 2018
I walked into this movie with the same expectations that many of you might have - "another Jurrasic Park", aka low expectations. It's our sheer love of dinosaurs that drives us to see it, so we fork over the dough and expect little.
However, I have to say I was surprised and impressed by this entry. There's something about the way Dr. Ian Malcom, reprised by the eminently believable Jeff Goldbloom, speaks on trial that makes you understand that he's very much defending this entry into the Jurrasic cannon and going beyond it.
He's reaching into current events. This is the result of what happens when you mess with complexity. The creators have thought deeply about this film and I felt its gravitas. I'ts not about thrilling moments as much any more - it's about the fallout from messing with genetic forces, about governments, hubris, and how change is a surprise guest at the dinner table.
They got a little philosophical in this one, in a good way. Relatedly, there's a twist in here that I won't spoil, but was so interesting it did the nearly miraculous - it made me excited for the next in the series.
Four stars - three and a half for the movie and a half to counter the haters.
