Review of Junebug (2005) by Ryan H — 23 Nov 2009
I didn't hate it, but I didn't necessarily like it either. Amy Adams puts on a terrific performance (perhaps her second best next to Doubt). There were plenty of funny moments, but the heartfelt moments really never feel legitimate.
I felt like the main character was a horrible person. She doesn't ever really care about anyone except for herself. If she does something for someone, it's because she was forced into it or because it could benefit her.
All of this is fine, but they tried to make her seem like she has loving intentions. I could be wrong, but I feel the character takes a different turn than what the filmmakers imagined. No one really changes throughout the film either.
It's all very static. They try to show a family changing from an outsider coming in, but I don't know what they were like before, and they certainly didn't do a good job at explaining it. The only character we truly come to know is the main character, but even she is still 2 dimensional.
The funny moments and Adams performance give this movie any worth of watching. Other than that, stick to movies that actually know how to portray real life.
