Review of Junebug (2005) by Fred W — 23 Jan 2008
PLOT: Madeline (art gallery owner) is recruiting crazy/racist artist in the south. They stay nearby with her husband George's family who she has never met. George's brother Johnny is angry and withdrawn, his pregnant wife Ashley is child-like and always happy, the Mom is domineering, and the Dad is kookie but actually somewhat wise.
Madeline is nice and warms to everyone but at one point disappoints George when she can't go to the hospital when Ashley is in labor. At one point George and Ashley, and Johnny and Madeline emotionally connect better with each other.
In the end, Ashley loses the baby; she is actually depressed that Johnny is so withdrawn, but he finally makes an attempt to reconnect. George shows strong commitment to his family, but is happy to return to Chicago with Madeline where they were happy.
REVIEW: good, unique, quirky.
