Review of Jumping the Broom (2011) by Vinney C — 06 May 2011

Now here is an actual romantic comedy that isn't too bad. But then again, to have a romantic comedy that is up to the level of other good movies is about as rare as seeing a comedy that makes someone cry as much as laugh. So, Jumping the Broom is actually a good romantic comedy, but as an overall film, it doesn't do too well. In the meantime, I must say that at least I did have a little bit of fun at the movie, with this being a movie that usually ends up being a bigger hit on DVD or in later weeks at the box office, but had this been released about three weeks ago or so, this probably would end up close to the top of the list by the end, sort of like True Grit. But let's get this started.

First off, the chemistry between the stars is actually something I enjoyed. Yeah, that's right. Sure, there's Something Borrowed, where absolutely nothing works, but in this case, this works, and so does the attractiveness. I'm sure that girls will enjoy the guys and I enjoyed the girls. But now there's the acting. Well, the acting was actually ok. I thought maybe if they could have gotten some more stars that lead Hollywood, but what they had was great as it was.

But before I say that bad rating means I just hate romantic comedies, there's one more thing: story. Pretty much every romantic comedy has a bad story. Unfortunately, this is the same case for Jumping the Broom. I say that pretty much the problem with these stories is quite simple: they all have the same one. Girl falls for guy or guy falls for girl, one or both of them are goofs, and in the end, there's a big fight and eventually they get together. Well, guess what? I'm sick of it. Overall, a basic story that's bad ruins an otherwise perfect romantic comedy.
