Review of Jumping the Broom (2011) by Sincere W — 24 Aug 2011
The one thing to remember when watching this film is not to expect subtlety. It mixes melodrama and broad comedy in a fashion that could prove disastrous in lesser hands, but manages to stay afloat thanks to lively performances and a director who knows how to avoid jarring shifts in tone (unlike Tyler Perry, who has no idea what it means to be a director).
The film flows pretty evenly throughout or at least up until the final 20 minutes or so where things are wrapped up neatly in an alarmingly quick fashion. I would have loved for them to have focused more on the issues of class and wealth in the black community, but it's still an above-average rom-com with an appealing cast and top-notch cinematography.
And it's far superior to the majority of vapid, insipidly bland and sometimes offensive romantic comedies that Hollywood has consistently mass-produced for years now. So give it a chance, trust me you could do much worse.
