Review of Julius Caesar (1953) by Tom G — 26 May 2008
The first half of the movie was compelling; especially to hear Mark Antony's speech, and Marlon Brando's fantastic portrayal of the character. It is an unforgettable acting moment. Other than that, the movie is slow as you'd expect of this genre at the time it was made 50s.
The soundtrack is annoying, and the battle scenes are the opposite of exciting. But I also keen to see Shakespeare's text adapted on screen, and I have to say that a play like this reminds me how much of a genius Shakespeare really was.
I don't know of any other playwright who can capture the human condition, and human tendencies, in such a range of characters so well.
