Review of Juliet of the Spirits (1965) by Andy C — 28 Feb 2010
Or, when absurdism is just absurd.
Giulietta (Giuletta Masina) plays the wife of a philandering filmmaker (gee, do you think the story is autobiographical?). To escape her anguish over the revelation of her husband's infidelity, Giulietta loses herself in mysticism, discovering newfound freedom by exploring a fantastical dreamworld.
Masina does the typically solid work she demonstrated in Fellini's earlier "La Strada," but the script lets her down at every turn. The entire movie is nothing more than New Age bullshit, with idiotic costumes solidifying this theme.
