Review of Juliet, Naked (2018) by Mmadnessgames — 20 Dec 2018
As a comedy, it's not hugely successful. But, I'm not stuck on genre as much as some of the critics on here. A film is a film. It doesn't have to fit into a box.
The character Chris O'Dowd plays is the only funny one, of the bunch, but the story itself is well written and interesting enough.
There were comedic moments that didn't work, like the hospital scene... in the sense that it felt like it was written to be funnier than it was. But the scene functioned, more or less, dramatically. So, I don't care.
The lesbian sister and the protagonist's boss didn't appeal to me at all. They should have cut them, completely. They don't function, dramatically or otherwise.
She's a creepy sexual predator, but she's a woman. How hilarious. There are too many references to her sexuality. She's a lesbian. I get it. So are lots of people. I don't find her any more interesting than a heterosexual creep... and the protagonist's boss is out of place. He reminds me of a Little Britain character. They overdo him. His character reeks of comic-relief desperation.
Ethan Hawke is convincing as Tucker Crow.
Rose Byrne is good in her role.
I was going to give this a 7, but I decided on 6 in the end... If they cut the awful comic relief characters, I'd probably give it 7.
It suffers - and benefits - from being an adaptation.
