Review of Juliet, Naked (2018) by Movie M — 25 Sep 2018
Reviewed 9.13.18 It avoids most rom-com faux pas while lightly skimming weightier topics, like infidelity, regret, and the unforgiving nature of time. Gotta respect a movie that lets a simple awkward exchange substitute for the usual eureka 'I love you' moment.
And there is no magical resolution, besides living and learning. It earns its emotional weight. Characters grow, but they don't wake up completely different people. It's refreshing in that sense.
It doesn't reinvent anything, but it successfully avoids the pitfalls. These are the same reasons that cookie-cutter types will find it lacking. It's designed for realists in search of light fare.
Some times it's nice to keep things grounded, without having to mire in pathos or stupidity.
