Review of Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) by Jason Y — 11 Sep 2005
VHS First Viewing, 2 Korine films seen.
I don't see much brilliance in Harmony Korine's highly original storytelling. Gummo is a much better film than Julien Donkey-Boy, but both deliver some highly original filmmaking. Korine wrote the screenplay for Larry Clark's Kids before he was given a camera to direct his own films. I also liked seeing him in a cameo in Gus Van Sant's latest meditation on existence Last Days.
I wouldn't consider myself a real fan of Korine, but I do recognize him as a unique talent. I would watch any film that he made, but I am sure that I wouldn't walk away from too many of them with much admiration.
Sorry I took so long to write this short, lackluster review. I am extremely busy and have no free time.
