An extordinary film that would not be appreciated by the common American audience, probably because of the way the relationships are played out and what the characters do with each other. Very un-american cultural things and dramatization going on here.
The characters are written and directed in such a interesting way that the situation is staged like what the filmmaker would do if he were those characters- and I could start to see where Truffaut was going with the story and the character and what he was trying to accomplish with them.
I could also see that this film was directed by a true auteur- his direction was very fluent, very open, and very careful and painstaking. That very rare breed of filmmaker that was the cineaste Francois Truffaut.
The great script and direction (both by Truffaut) and the film techniques used technically and plot-wise inspired such directors as Martin Scorsese and Francis Coppola. One of the few truly great films.
