Review of Jules and Jim (1962) by Ladd W — 09 Apr 2014
I enjoyed this movie for the most part. He loves her. She loves him, then she does love either him or him, but then she does love one, but not the other. The she hates both of them. Catherine just can't make up her mind! I especially like Truffaut's use of stock footage of Paris before and after WWI; how aware of itself this film is in certain historical and social contexts.
My favorite part, however, was the whole 'Catch me!' vibe Catherine exudes throughout the film, forcing Jules and Jim to compete for her affections. The little visual metaphors Truffaut sprinkles throughout the film are a nice touch, too, such as the portrait of Napoleon in Catherine's apartment in the early part of the film.
