Review of Jules and Jim (1962) by James M — 09 May 2007
I finally saw this much anticipated film, and I must say, it blew me away. Everthing from its edgy and innovative feel to its complex and sometimes tragic story was brilliant, and Truffaut has probably created the best New Wave film of that time.
A lot of conversation has been going around about the role of Catherine and whether or not she was supposed to represent the perfect woman, but I would argue that it does not matter so much, the film is a fascinating character study of three incredibly original and yet troubled individuals who learn to cope with each other's defects.
If anything, the film is more of a tragedy about Jules SPOILER as he must live on without his lover and his best friend in the end. Either way, the film was beautiful with stunning cinematography and an enchanting score.
The performances delivered by the three principle characters are unforgettable, particularily Moreau's as the complex Catherine. Overall, Truffaut has probably created his best film with Jules et Jim and one that will likely never be forgotten as a French masterpiece.
