Review of Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) by Shannon S — 20 Aug 2008
Wow was this good! it's long, no doubt. but it goes fast. one of the greatest closing statements i've heard. judy garland's role, though small, was fantastic and memorable. she can act the pants off of anyone.
also amusing that a young william shatner had a small role. the film the prosecutor showed during the trial of the camps was horrifying. this movie has really put into question how I feel about the war in some ways.
I always would tell myself that most germans weren't aware of what was going on. though I was always skeptical of that claim (hundreds of camps all over and all the jews disappear and i'm supposed to believe they didn't know what was happening?) this movie really makes you wonder.
it's hard to determine how responsible you can make the average german civilian for what happened. or for what they let happened, depending on how you view it. the final line of this movie is so good: "you knew the first time you executed a man you knew to be innocent.
" very powerful stuff.
