Review of Jude (1996) by Brian H — 04 Jun 2007
A tour-de-force that ended Thomas Hardy's novelistic career (he was forced to turn to poetry), putting Jude on film would scare the bravest director. Kate Winslet captures the character of Sue, but the actress who portrays her nemesis is even more powerful.
One of the most pessimistic of films you will probably ever encounter, it raises rather keenly the issue the Greeks called "fate.".
