Review of Jude (1996) by Aidan H — 06 Feb 2011
Winterbottom's suitably bleak adaptation of Hardy's tragic romance captures the earthy passions and conflicting philosophies of its protagonists with deep conviction. Eccleston is plausibly torn as the ambitious but doomed lover whilst Winslet's similarly tortured Sue is another in a long line of assured performances from the actress.
19th century England is so realistically captured in all its stony, rain-swept misery that I could almost feel the damp seeping into my bones. Although it has a made-for-TV feel, its respect for its source material lifts it above its limitations.
